Under The Eagles - The Plan

After a long... long... very long hiatus hopefully I am back with an idea that will will give me a chance to do several things I enjoy doing, which would be painting and collecting Napoleonic miniatures, as well as playing solo table top war games.

The Plan

This plan comes with three levels of play and multiple steps along that need to be taken along the way to bring this idea into action. Several of these steps have been completed or are underway as of writing this post.

Step 1: Choose Rule Sets (Mostly complete)
Choose or make rule sets to provide the ability to play at the campaign level, the grand tactical level, and at the Brigade/Divisional level. The idea with this step is to create a solo game experience that allows for campaign level gaming that can develop into game play with miniatures on the table. To do this I needed to find rule sets that allowed for the level of play in each of these categories. I was successful in my attempts for two of the needed rule sets, the third is one I will have to make on my own.

I chose this rule set for several reasons. The first was that these rules are fairly simple and work well with 6mm scale grand tactical battles, which I want to play. The second reason was that this rule set has multiple sets of playing cards that can be used to represent miniatures on table top in lieu of actually having the miniatures. For me this will be just a temporary solution while I work on my 6mm Napoleonic armies, most of which I have posted about before I went off somewhere else. Anyways, these card sets allow for the building of armies from the French, Austrian, Russian, Anglo-Allied, Prussian, and Spanish armies from across the Napoleonic wars. The above picture shows one of the card set boxes and I have recently purchased all of the other sets.

-General d'Armee by Reisswitz Press
While Blucher provides the ability to play on the grand tactical level, my goal for the campaign level games needs to be able to handle smaller engagements that might be found in rear guard battles or the initial stages of a meeting engagement. Blucher can only support down to about 3 army corps on each side, which means I need rules for smaller-ish battles. I have not had a lot of time to read through the rule for General d'Armee, but what I have seen on YouTube indicate that this rule set might support battles of this type.

-General de Brigade by Partizan Press
Which leads me to the next rule set with which I hope to provide for brigade level battles. Which of these last two rule sets I use will require some play testing before I can make my final decision.

The other nice thing about General de Brigade, is that the creators of the game have written numerous scenarios for their rule set, which will help both with play testing and ideas for game development.

Finally I need a rule set for campaign level gaming that can be used to integrate all of this into a single system of play. Unfortunately, I have never heard of or seen a pre-made rule set like this. Which means I have to make it on my own.

-Under the Eagles
While not the most original name, though it does fit the blog. I have already begun writing this rule set and have plans for how to execute the building of all of every aspect of the rules that I want. As I get these rules into a form of usability I will write some posts about them and I may even post the rules at some point.

These rules would support a multi-day (real life days) level of game play that would allow me to play the campaign on weekdays and the battles of the campaign on weekends or on days off. I will be endeavoring to keep the rules simple, but have a decent amount of engagement.

Step 2: Campaign Level Supplies
This step is going to take more research and testing as there is not a lot of pre-made material for what I want to do exactly.

-Maps
Initially what I thought would be a very challenging step, thankfully became very easy once I found maps that someone else had made for their own gaming system that meets my needs exactly.

These maps were made by someone I only know as Murat for their own campaign style game, but thankfully this person has made the maps free for anyone that wants to use them for their own purposes. These maps are based on a node movement system, which is not what I wanted originally (I wanted hex maps), but this work better for more of a free form style of game play. The distance between each node is supposed to represent the distance an army formation can march in a single campaign day.

I am planning on using FedEx's online printing service to print these as 36 in by 24 in lamented maps. The first ones to get printed will be focused on Austria.

-Game Pieces
I need game pieces that can be used to represent brigade or division level units along with artillery for every army I want to play with.  My current plan is to reuse board game pieces, but I am not sure about this as a solution. I want to be able to magnetize whatever I end up using so that the maps and campaign pieces can be placed on a metallic surface and stored or posted somewhere easily.

-Orders of Battle
This will be the hard part of this step. I have done research and not found a lot of what I am looking for as I need campaign orders of battle, not the more easily accessible orders of battle for the individual engagements. What I might end up doing is just smashing enough information together to sort of recreate the OOBs I need. I want these to be easily reference-able and in a format that can be used in support of the campaign rules.

Step 3: Terrain
Currently I already have a lot of miniatures ready for play, I unfortunately do not have a lot of terrain to support this game play. Seeing as how I do not want to spend a lot of time making terrain, I am willing to spend the extra dollar to buy pre-made terrain

-Roads, Rivers, Forests, Hills, Farms, and Buildings
On order right now is a set of forests and hills from a company called terrains4games. They are a company in Poland that makes all of this stuff at tabletop quality for a good price in the 28mm scale. If I like their work the next order will probably be roads and rivers.

For the 6mm scale I am going to have to do more searching. Thankfully buildings and tress are already taken care off, as I bought a bunch of buildings from 100 Days line produced by Total Battle Miniatures. The trees I made by torturing myself for multiple hours, hence the choice to not make any more terrain unless it only involves some coats of paint and a few snips with some scissors.  I have an idea for hills, but hopefully the terrains4games products will solve the hill problem, which just leaves me with roads and rivers in 6mm as a problem to be solved.

For gaming surfaces, I came up with the ingenious idea of using portable tables and sheets of particle board to give myself the ability to set up about 48 square feet of game table. With the added benefit that all of that gaming space can be packed away when I am done fairly easily and quickly.

To furnish the top of that gaming space I am making use of the battle mats from Cigar Box Battles. These mats are very well made and also pack up quite nicely.

Step 4: Play Testing
Play testing has to take place at multiple levels. Already underway are tests and edits to Blucher with the playing cards as a miniature substitute. Next will be play tests with General d'Armee and General de Brigade. Probably the last to be play tested will be my own rules for the campaign level games.

This last area of testing will focus on a specific campaign that I would like to re-fight. For starters I have chosen the 1805 Ulm-Austerlitz campaign, which means I need 3 armies (French, Russian, and Austrian)

Step 5: Build Armies
Last but not least, build my miniature armies. The current focus is on 28mm miniatures for General d'Armee and General de Brigade as I already have an impressive number of 6mm Napoleonics. The French have good start in 28mm and the Austrians are underway currently, but the Russians will have to be started from scratch. For manufactures I plan on focusing on Perry, Victrix, and maybe some Warlord.

6mm will all come from Baccus 6mm. As I said above, I already have a lot of these painted, but there will be a focus on bringing the Austrians and Russians up to a level needed for grand tactical battles. I will post more details on the miniatures as I paint them.

So that is the overall big picture of what I have decided to do. You can look forward to miniature painting updates and play testing over the coming weeks.

More Napoleonics

Just thought I would throw up some more pictures from the other day. Not a whole lot more. I normally take a lot of pictures then sort through them after the fact.

More 6mm Napoleonics

Just to give you an idea of the number of 6mm Napoleonics I have painted here are some figures.

54 Cavalry Regiments = 972 Figures
55 Infantry Regiments = 2640 figures
40 Guns = 40 guns + 160 crew
32 Regiments with attached skirmishers = 128 figures
38 Division Commanders = 38 figures
10 Corps Commanders = 20 figures
3 Army Commanders = 9 figures

Total = 3,967 figures + 40 guns.

This is only what is painted as well. Note some of the photos are intentionally blurry.

As you can see I have started making trees. They are not too time consuming, but they can be a little messy when making them.

Biggest update in terms of completing more formations has been the fleshing out of two more divisions for the Russians. I have another Russian Division to work through as well as some Russian Guard, Artillery, and Commanders. After that I will either pump out more Russians or more Austrians.

I LIVE!

Wow it has been a while. Quick life update so that you all know that I have been doing stuff and not just sitting around in a vegetative state.

Finished my senior project(in spite of the efforts of some of my teammates to the contrary), Graduated with my bachelors, applied and got into graduate school at Chico State for Computer Engineering for the Fall of 2015, moved to a new(nicer and quieter) apartment, competed in my first Ballroom Dance Competition, and a whole slew of other life events that I will leave off the blog. Those were the big points anyways.

How about what have I been doing miniature wise. Well.... I got back in to 6mm Napoleonics(no big surprise with the 200th anniversary of Waterloo and Scourge of War: Waterloo having come out). The big reason was because I decided to start re-basing all of my 6mm figures. I figured out from all the work that I have been doing on the 6mm Warhammer 40k that better bases go a long way in the miniature realm. Not doing anything terribly crazy..... yet.  I finished this crazy re-basing a few weeks ago. Hopefully I will never do that again.

God's eye view

Big things to note.

Recently ordered a bunch of stuff for my 6mm terrain. First is a battle mat of the battle of Quatra Bras from Cigar Box Battle Mats. These look really good. I plan on more in the future. I meant to get the battle of Waterloo map, but I goofed the order up.

Also I ordered a bunch of buildings from Total Battle Miniatures 100 Days 6mm line up. Basically I ordered almost everything for Lingy, Quatre Bras, and Waterloo. I left out Wavre and some of the other out lying areas as I do not need them yet. I will be back for more later. I have yet to paint the buildings for Plancenoit. These are really good buildings if anyone is looking for terrain.

Here are some more shots of the set up that I did for this photo shoot. The battle map is 4'x6', however the space that I set up for these photos is 4'x4'.

I will post more photos in another blog update later. I also have a bunch of other updates that I will start spamming the blog with soon.

More French Cavalry

Quick update as promised for my 6mm Napoleonics. I am now down to only two more units of French Cavalry to paint (squeals of utter delight ringing in my head at the moment). These are two regiments of Hussars. The 1st and 4th Regiments of Hussars. They form part of the French I Cavalry Corps.

1st Hussars
4th Hussars

After these next two Regiments of Chassuers are painted up I will be moving on to a small amount of French Artillery and limbers. This of course includes any continued work on my Epic 40k miniatures.

Slogging on

It has been a while since I did a post and I apologize for that. The lack of posts has not been due to a lack of work, it is more due to a choice really. That choice being that I can either post a lot of tiny little blurbs on what I am doing or just do a single big post on all that has been happening. And with my school schedule the latter becomes easier.

Sooooo what have I been doing. Despite what the following pictures show, I have been doing a lot. I'll start with terrain. As I noted in a previous post I had decided to go back a redo a lot of the pathetic excuses that I had for terrain and so far so good. I have successfully made a lot of (still want more) wooden zig-zag fences as well as starting  to get under way with producing stone walls. I improved my hedges and even did a test tree stand which I will produce more of when I am done making fences and stone walls. I still have a way to go on getting all the fences done though as I need to spray paint all of them, but I lack the facilities to do that at my apartment sadly. So when I go home in July for a week I will be doing a lot of preparatory work to enable me to continue working on the terrain and miniatures.

A look at what I have been doing.

Next up is a 6mm Napoleonic update. I just finished three more regiments of Dragoons and used two of the regiments to finish off another French Cavalry Division. I realize now that I made one tiny little (more like really big) mistake in the way I ordered all of my 6mm Napoleonic figures. I bought a tone of French Cavalry. I mean a tone of it. I will have 43 French Cavalry regiments by the time I am done painting just what I own currently. What is even more ironic is that I have gotten really good at painting French Dragoons as they make up the majority of the French Cavalry arm( I have painted 15 regiments of the 30 I have info on). But the end is in sight.... kind of. All that is left is 1 regiment of Lancers, 2 regiments of Hussars, and 2 regiments of Chasseurs.

The French 7th Cav Division.
The 6th Dragoons.

The 16th Dragoons.

The 2nd Dragoons.
After I finish all of these French Cavalry regiments I will be onto more French Artillery and finally (almost a year after I had planned to start them) onto the Russians.

Lastly I am really excited as I get closer to finally making an order for 6mm American Civil War Miniatures. I plan on doing this some time next month and it will be a kind of kick starter on this project. I plan of focusing on the Eastern theater of the war and will be starting with armies based on the Gettysburg Order of Battle. The first major units I will be building will be the I Corps under John Reynolds and two of A.P. Hill's three divisions, plus John Buford's two Cavalry brigades that were at Gettysburg( His third one was else where). As you can see this will be a Gettysburg day one starter and from there I will develop the armies so that I can do anything before Gettysburg and after Gettysburg. With this new project there are going to be some changes from the Napoleonic 6mm project as I want to make this project distinct as there are a lot of difference between the two periods in terms of army organization. I'll talk more about that later. So stay tuned for more updates.

French II and IV Cavalry Corps

Today marks the completion of another major part of the French army. I have completed two of the main Cavalry Corps that I have planned for the French army. These are the II and IV Cavalry Corps as the title of this post gives away. Both Corps have a structure of two divisions and two horse artillery batteries, making for a total of 16 regiments and 4 horse artillery batteries. The II Corps is comprised entirely of Dragoon regiments while the IV is comprised of Curisasser regiments. These two Corps comprise most of the Medium and Heavy Cavalry that I have planned with only the III Cavalry Corps containing the second largest heavy cavalry formation. There will also be small smatterings of medium Calvary around the army but not as large as the II Cav Corps. Though these other cavalry formation will not get any work done on them for a while. There will be some work on the I Cavalry Corps, but it is a mixed medium and light Corps. I have some other Allied and maybe another French Corps that may contain more heavies, but for right now this is it.

French II Corps

French IV Corps

Work still continues as I write this. Currently I am working on clearing out the last of the prepared French Cavalry and Artillery so that I can launch myself into  Russian army additions. I am also anticipating the new Baccus 6mm French Napoleonic sculpts that are on the way. I am really interested to see what they all look like and I fervently hope that the holes in the product line are filled.

In other news I am beginning to work on revamping my terrain as my cheap method kinda.... well.... looks cheap. That means that I have finally found some ideas for trees, roads, rivers, difficult terrain, fences,  and crop fields that are easy to do and look rather good. So hopfully by the time I show another battlefield layout the miniatures will have a suitable field to fight on. I still need to figure out hills though and I have decided that bridges and buildings will just have to be bought and painted.

And finally I have reached the conclusion to permanently stall any major 28mm projects as well as my 6mm Warhammer 40K project. Both on the account that the returns for trying to work on such projects are too little with how much time I have available and the cost is not currently worth the results from my efforts. Therefore 6mm Napoleonics and painting individual 28 -54mm figures as well as some plans for a 6mm American Civil War project(Baccus miniatures of course) that will start with a focus on Gettysburg and should go all the way to an  army range that covers the start of the war to Appomattox. This is still in the planning stage and no miniatures will be bought for a while but that is the current plan. All I have down is a basing system and an order for more bases and basing materials. Flags will be next then a kick start into the range will be the final go ahead for that project.

Long Awaited 6mm Napoleonic Update

It is very ironic that as soon as I finally get back involved with painting miniatures that I have a new semester of college to look forward too. Oh well. As I have done in the past these are just some divisional updates. I am nearing completion of the French IV Cavalry Corps. But otherwise no new major formations have been completed yet.

First up is my newly completed Imperial Guard Infantry Division. This Division consists of the 3rd Regiment of Old Guard Grenadiers. Which was formerly a Dutch Grenadier Regiment in Holland before France took over the country and Napoleon absorbed that Regiment into the Imperial Guard. The other Regiment is a fictitious 3rd Regiment of Middle Guard Chasseurs. The idea behind this Regiment is the same as that of the 3rd Old Guard Regiment. That it served as a part of the Guards to King Louis in Holland before Napoleon merged these two Regiments into the Imperial Guard. This Division is know as the Imperial Guard 3rd Division.

I made the stone wall my self using basing materials.

Up next is the completed Imperial Guard Heavy Cavalry regiment comprised of the "The Gods" and "The Immortals". Both of which are Grenadiers a Cheval Regiments. Accompanying them are "Empress Dragoons" and the "Imperial Dragoons". Both of which are Dragoon Regiments. The later of each classification are fictitious regiments so as to fill out some spaces in the Divisions and to use extra figures from Baccus 6mm.

The Empress Dragoons
The Imperial Dragoons
You can read more about these other two Cavalry Regiments in an earlier post on this blog.

And finally I have the newly finished (sort of, I am still missing the Division commander for this division) 14th French Cavalry Division. It is Comprised of the 5th, 6th, 9th, and 10th Cuirassier Regiments. This Division when finished will join the French IV Cavalry Corps.

The fence is hand made using toothpicks that I shaved and cut up.

Currently I am working on the French 10th Cavalry Division which is comprised of Dragoons and I have also begun painting my Ferrus Manus proxy. Expect an update on the Primarch project sometime soon. Until next time.
