As promised here are some photos of where the Legion currently stands. They are all just temporarily based as I would like to base them all at once and their are a few more things I am looking for in terms of basing material.
Not much more to say. I am working on finishing another 6 repaint figures and 8 freshly painted figures. I also plan on doing some base coating this week(weather permitting). I would have done it last week, but I had to be out of town.

Legionnaires Disease
No I am not sick. Though my desk is currently covered in Imperial Roman Legionaries. I got back from spring break a while ago and while I was at my parents house I remembered to grab my Imperial Roman Legionaries that I had left there. Subsequently I have been working these last few days to repair the painted figures and then begin to update their paint job, much in the same manner that I am working on my 28mm Napoleonics. I also went through and took stock of the number of figures I have and what all I could do with them. The following pictures are a few flights of fancy on that subject.
On a side note. I have a little bit of a funny story to go along with the title of this post. About a year ago I got an email from some group asking if they could use one of my old photos in a paper on Legionnaires Disease. I never answered because they wanted a photo quality that I could not obtain. Still it is rather funny.
As you can see I have a lot of prepaired figures and some that where painted to a rather bad standard(by my current standards anyway). The repair work is mainly focused on the water slide transfers as some of them have started to come off the shields as I did a pretty bad job at the time. Also there are a few figure that I may never use, as the poses that I set up are just awful. Oh to be a young and dumb miniature enthusiest.
Parting thoughts and shots. I have not done one of these in a while.
First up are some pictures of the two books that I use the most for painting Napoleonics. I was reading another persons blogs and happened to notice that he had recently been to a literary museum in France and they had a tone of figure plates on collection by this one French couple. I saw one of the plates and went "Hey now, I own a book of that stuff".
They are not worth more than about $25, so don't bother trying to hunt up where I live just to steal them. They are however, an excellent source for trying to figure out what colors to use for your figures.
The last thing I have on my mind is this idea of redoing paint jobs for my figures. I am dead set on doing this for my 28mm Napoleonics and Romans. The full realization that I was stifling my painting skill because I wanted a uniform look is quite startling. And as such I have been looking at my 6mm collection wondering if I should redo those figures as well. No firm plans as of yet besides a definite desire to redo all of the bases for my 6mm figures. In fact I plan on staying away from my 6mm stuff until I get one of these two current redo project over with.

Shields!! Shields!!
As the title states I have finished a lot of Roman Legionary Shields. The process is not too involved thankfully and the results are pretty good. And since I got the shields all finished up I decided to finish up the few Romans that need shielding.

The keen observer will note that the shields have some variance in the color even down to the water slide transfers. This is caused by a difference in the transfers themselves. I needed to get extras because the transfers I originally had came from the box sets that I had bought a long time ago. And when I purchased these figures, I bought them as separate spruces. So imagine my surprise when I get the extra transfers and they are way brighter than the ones you get in a box set. Solution? After the last bit of clear coat to keep the transfers down, I added a varying degree of black wash to darken the transfers.
Also I have fully assembled the Praetorian figures I got with my last order from Warlord Games. A few notes on them. Their sculpt quality is on par with the Romans Legionaries and the are some nice new addition to the spruces. Big complaint that I have had for a long time with these sets, is that there are far to few arms holding a Gladius. It is a small thing, but it is compounded when a spruce has four bodies that ares supposed to be holding a Gladius and Warlord only gives you two arms with swords per spruce.
These guys are currently ready to be base coated, but who would have guessed that it would start raining like none other here in the parched state of California?
Note on my Napoleonics. I spent Sunday removing about 60 figures from their old bases and started updating and improving the paint jobs. Look for an update on that later.
Also notes on the Blog. I am looking to change up how the posts appear. I am trying to get it so that the page is not bogged down by pictures. So keep an eye out for changes.

Cohort Command
Quick update. Finished both of the two sets of command figures that I have for Legionary Cohorts(except for their shields). However, I only have a photo of one of the command sets. I have also gotten some Praetorians and I have begun putting them together. I have maybe enough figures for a Cohort, but I currently have to figure out what I am going to do for the shield design.
Additionally I have a few pictures of one of my Optios (Cohort Second in command). There will be one Optio for each Cohort and I currently have five others painted but no Shields as of yet.
As a side note I have also finally figured out how to properly put water slide transfers on. Took a little bit of research. I will have to try and figure out how to fix the figures I did a few years ago however.
Some parting thoughts. I have to laugh a bit, as it has been a long time since I have painted 28mm figures like this. The biggest shock was the switch from painting metal and then to plastic 28mm figures. If you are not ready for the change over, the weight difference between metal and plastic figures makes it feel as though you are painting air. Which is a weird feeling. The other thing I am beginning to look at is a way to make painting 28mm Napoleonics enjoyable again. I have a ton of unfinished 28mm figures and the variety of plastic 28mm figures has increased quite a bit since I last looked at them. No firm plans at the moment, just day dreaming.

Legion Command
As promised more Romans. These four figures make up an infantry command stand for one of the Legions I am working on. They represent the central command of the Legion and are based around the Legion symbol, the Eagle.
I have decided to start with the 10th Legion. The base color for this legion will be Red. And I plan on changing the color scheme each of the legions that I make. Once again the base is temporary as I have not made an order for new bases from Likto as of yet. I am still waiting for Warlord Games to ship the last order I made. So bases will not be ordered until later this month.
The observant watcher will note that I have once again changed how I paint flesh. I like the new look. It is not as fleshy pink as the Romans I painted previous to these figures, which is a good thing.

Romans? What did they ever do for us?
Anyone reading this right now is probably thinking to themselves "Romans? I thought we were going to see Gundams in the next post". Well that was the plan. And as soon as I feel like taking a bunch of pictures I will oblige and smother the blog in Gundam model kits.
Here is the real question that you should be asking yourself. Why did I start this project back up? As anyone who has been following this blog will note, I at one point shelved a bunch of projects in favor of working on some of my 6mm projects. The answer is as follows. When I first started this project I did not have a good focus on what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do what little I was working on at the time. And now I am pretty sure I have the kinks worked out. The biggest problem was the base sizes for the figures. The standard 40mmx40mm sizes were not working because of the need for extra depth on each base. I tried to use 50mmx50mm bases, but the extra width from those bases made the figures look too spread out. Solution get a different size base and with the help of Likto this can be done.
Second reason for doing this, it is my Dad's fault. Over the break I was able to spend a lot of time talking with my Dad. In these discussions we cover the Earth about eight or nine times. This year we hit on the subject of the Imperial Roman army several times and that started this little revival. When I got back to my apartment and started looking through what projects I could work. I realized that I wanted to be able to paint figures on the scale of detail that I had done for my Dad's Christmas gift. Combine the two and you get a revamped Imperial Roman Army project.
The good news is that I think that I will be able to use all of the figures I have worked on previously. They will just need to be removed from their bases and given a good was to give them the right look.
The other plus side is that I have a pretty good sized chunk of the figures I want to work with. This means that I will not have to sink a lot cash into the project to get started. I plan on making Cohorts sized at 24 figures to a Cohort on 3 bases. That means I am looking at bases sized at 50mmx80mm. I will probably try to make 2 or 3 legions with some other units thrown into the mix. The bad news is that 95% of these figures are at my parents house.
In the mean time I have bought a few figures to give me something to work on and here are some of the results so far.
This is a Roman general. And as you can see he is heavily based on the movie Gladiator. I probably will not permanently base him on the base you see him on. That is there mostly for the purpose of keeping the figure was toppling over as he is a little top heavy.
That is it for now. expect more in the future.

Reinforcements are on Route
Under 6mm Eagles update
So a few updates on all the projects I am working on are in store. The biggest update, in terms of the number of unites added to the available OOB, is to the French. I have completed a grand total of 12 artillery batteries(8 Horse batteries and 4 Light batteries). The Light batteries and one of the horse batteries will go to completing the French I Corps' Artillery park. The other 7 Horse batters will go to the II Corps(1x), the Imperial Guard(2x), and to the II and IV Cavalry Corps(2x each). Once again I am awe struck at the 6mm line. Nothing else compares to this.
The second addition to the French army comes in the form of two newly completed Cavalry Regiments. One of Hussars and one of Chasseurs. They are the 6th Reg of Hussars and the 8th Reg of Chasseurs. They are for the newly started 7th Cav Division in the French IV Corps. Note to reader: Do not ask why I paint what I paint when I paint it. It does not make sense to me either. As for painting these guys. If I ever get around to buying some of Perry's plastic Hussars, I certainly hope I have more fun painting them than I do with these 6mm guys. They are a pain in the butt to paint. Not sure why( I think it may have to due with all the colors and trying to make it look good on 6mm, generally not hard to do given the "paint what you can see at 3ft" rule). Anyways they are done and I still have more to do.
Next for the 6mm line I think I am going to start on some of French Line Lancers I have base coated so I can complete the French I Corps.
Eagles of Rome update
I finished base coating the last two boxes of Warlord Games Roman Legionaries that I have. As well as having made another contribution to having trees cut down in the forests by ordering some more bases from LITKO. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for bases for their miniatures. All the shapes and sizes you could want. They even give a few options on what material you want them made out of and thickness. Enough of the advertisements. SO the plan right now is to use the bases that are coming in this order to outfit as many 12 figure Cohorts from all my Romans as possible. Once this is done I then should be able to tell how many more commanders I need. With that I should be able to get an order together sometime in February(provided I do not get distracted............ again).
Once I get all the command figures I need I should with just what is in these two pictures be able to make 16 Cohorts. I think I will try for two Legions then.
Under the Eagles update
So here is the now completed 28mm French 1st and 2nd Regiments of Old Guard Grenadiers. 4 full battalions of les grognards to give the Allies and French command a pain in the neck. Next I think I am going to start on either the 3rd Reg of Old Guard Grenadiers or finish the other Victrix French line Reg that is waiting to be painted. As well as getting some more Roman commanders the next order of Miniatures should also included some battalion commanders from Perry to round out a couple of battalions I have lying around.
